HURRICANE, W.Va. (Chris Williams) -- If you have ever tried turning into Hurricane City Park on a busy day, you know just how frustrating it can be.

"It causes a major traffic tie-up. Between the middle lane and trying to get in here, it can sometimes take you 20 to 30 minutes to get in," said lifelong Hurricane resident Vicky Grass.

The biggest reason for the traffic tie-up is the bridge is only 18 feet across, which means only one car can fit on the bridge at a time, but a new grant recently received by the city of Hurricane is going to make this one-lane bridge a thing of the past.

Hurricane City Manager Ben Newhouse said city officials have been told the work is likely to start sometime in October or November to replace the bridge.

"It's a single platform bridge. It's two lanes with a pedestrian walkway," Newhouse said.

The Division of Highways is partnering with the city to build the bridge, which is going to cost about $300,000. Newhouse said the DOH has agreed through this program that it will take care of 80 percent of the cost.

That means the city has to chip in about $60,000, and Newhouse said one-third of that has already been raised. There is no time frame yet on when the new bridge will be ready, but people are already excited.

Grass said it will be "so nice to be able to go in and out all at the same time."
