GREENUP, Ky. (Dan Matics, Tiersa Davis)-- Two people are facing charges following an animal cruelty investigation in Greenup County, Kentucky.

Joe Rhea, 70, and Lois Rhea, 77, both of Greenup were charged with second-degree animal cruelty.

The Greenup County Sheriff's Department began an investigation after an animal rescue group from Tennessee contacted them about a possible puppy mill. Deputies said the group bought two Boston Terriers from the suspects on Craig's List that had allegedly been neglected. Deputies said one of the dogs suffered from a severe neck injury from a collar that was too tight. Deputies said they went to the suspects' home with animal control and discovered four more dogs living in inhumane conditions. Those dogs also were for sale on Craig's List, deputies said.

"Obviously, it was startling!” Allison Sparling of Craigslist rescue said. “The smell of rotting flesh - to me, it’s disgusting that it’s only a misdemeanor. They should be facing felony charges."

Deputies said the dogs were taken to the Greenup County Animal Shelter and were treated for their injuries by a veterinarian.
