CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Katy Brown) -- Charleston police have arrested more than 20 people at the Transit Mall, within the past few weeks, zoning in on those who frequent the area.
But this time a business owner in the area has been arrested after police said she was running a theft ring.
Carrie Richardson, the store manager at FYE in the Charleston Town Center, said this arrest leaves her "overjoyed."
"You don't know how much because it's at the point now our store could close if they don't get it under control," Richardson said.
According to police, Khatin Ghoul paid several people to go into stores, including FYE, to steal and resell merchandise at the Middle East Market at the Transit Mall.
"We were getting hit with 18 DVDs a day by certain individuals, and then now it's branched off to headphones, tower speakers," Richardson said.
This arrest by Charleston police has been eight months in the making, working closely with store managers to put an end to the situation.
"The big thing about it is sitting and watching them steal and then them laughing at us because they know they can keep doing it because they're not getting in trouble," Richardson said.
But it looks like now Richardson and other victims of the alleged crime are getting the last laugh.
"It always amazes us when we do a search warrants for the most obvious places and the things we find," Sgt. Bobby Eggleton with Charleston police said.
Besides the stolen merchandise, police found large amounts of cash and marijuana.
And if the criminal charges weren't enough for the Middle East Market, police said they are contacting the health department to report poor conditions in the market's deli.
Police said the deli area had water leaking from the ceiling and on to the grill. They said the grills and equipment look like they haven't been cleaned in months.
Police also issued a search warrant on Ghoul's house. Depending on what is found in the home, more charges could be pending.
