RED HOUSE, W.Va. (Chris Williams) -- They may be man’s best friend, but not all dogs have a place to call home.

While the dogs wait to be adopted, people who come to the newly built Putnam County shelter say they are glad these animals at least have a comfortable place to stay.

"This is my first time in the new one. It looks very impressive," animal lover Terry Thompson said.

Terry Thompson has five animals, so he was not adopting a pet. He was in the shelter Thursday afternoon to take advantage of a new perk the shelter is offering.

"We were just sponsoring three cats, pay the adoption fee, and hopefully make a difference...Somebody adopt them that maybe didn't have the funds," Thompson said.

Putnam County humane officer Greg Sydenstritker said the old shelter was dark and rundown, so people never really came in. Now, about 50 people a day are coming to see the animals.

"Our adoptions are up, our euthanasia is down. We've got a nice new facility here," Putnam County Humane Officer Greg Sydenstritker said.

The shelter only has to put down about three animals per month, which is a huge decrease compared to years past.

The old shelter only had 23 dog cages. They now have 44. There is also a huge storage room, and a machine to easily clean the kennels each day. Thompson said the new shelter is important to the county, and important in finding these guys forever homes.

"I think a lot of times prevent animals from getting hurt or killed on roads," Thompson said.
