SOUTHSIDE, W.Va. (Chris Williams) -- A dangerous road turned deadly this morning, when a man on a farm tractor was hit by a car trying to pass several others at once on route 35.

"Driving way too fast, and they were passing in a no passing zone, and that is the direct cause of the fatality today," said West Virginia State Trooper Sgt. TS Mills.

The driver of the car was taken to a Huntington hospital, and traffic was backed up for miles while police cleaned up the accident.

"I left Charleston at 11:30, it's now 1:15," said Kathleen Kouki who was stuck in traffic.

The crash happened near the Putnam, Mason County border. People who frequently drive on this road say they'd like to see some changes to route 35.

"If we had four lanes probably would be nice for speed of travel, and maybe a little safer with all the tractor trailers that are on the road," said Paula Griffin who drives the road a few times a month.

Troopers shut down the road for several hours while they recreated the accident. Sgt. Mills says mapping it out will give officers a detailed computer drawing of the entire scene and hopefully help answer some questions. And figure out a way to make this stretch of road, safer.
