CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Fallon Pierson) -- Members of one local family are dealing with some hard times after their 16-month-old was diagnosed with leukemia.

Wyatt Carpenter is your average toddler. That is, until he was diagnosed with AML leukemia. His mom noticed he was running a fever and had to use things to steady him when he was walking.

She took him to Charleston Area Medical Center Women and Children's Hospital just in the nick of time.

After a week of tests, doctors found the leukemia and started chemotherapy immediately.

Right now, baby Wyatt is responding to the treatments.

For the next six months, the family will be traveling back and forth between hospital and home.

If Wyatt quits responding to the chemo after that time, family members will have to find a bone marrow donor.

It's not the first time Wyatt's mom has dealt with this disease. She said it seems to run in the family.

"I hate it. He looks at me like, 'Why is this happening to me?' I can't do anything about it. My paw-paw died a little over a year ago from leukemia, and now my son has it. It kills me. I wish it was me and not him," Sarah Meadows said.

Wyatt's family refuses to leave his side while he is in the hospital. The crisis has made expenses tight, and the family has started a fund online.

Wyatt has a 75 to 80 percent survival rate. After he is healed, he will have to relearn how to walk because the leukemia has affected the bones in his legs.
