CRUM, W.Va.(Dan Matics) -- New details have come to light as to why police say a Wayne County man was murdered in cold blood, as the wife of the victim remained in shock Saturday night.
The arrest of Brien Scott Bays, is about the only thing that will bring the slightest comfort to Maria Laney.
"I'm thankful they got the man, but it doesn’t bring back Richard,” Laney said. “Nothing will bring him back."
Wayne County Sheriff’s deputies said Bays fired two shots Friday night, killing her husband, Richard Laney, as he stood at the front door of his home on Riverbend Road in Crum.
In the next room, Maria Laney, his wife of 22 years, was sleeping.
"I thought I was dreaming," she said. "I can’t believe it’s happening! I just can’t believe it."
Deputies said the two had gotten along fine, however witnesses said earlier in the night, Bays was drunk on moonshine, waving around a pistol and was asked to leave a party.
Bays allegedly fled the scene, but deputies were able to catch up with him the next day. And, as he waits for his day in court, his widow remembers much happier times.
"He just laughed and joked with you and everything,” she said. “I want people to remember him that way."
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Department also had help from State Police and U.S. Marshals.
