CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Leslie Rubin) -- An emotional show of support in court Wednesday for one of the men accused of murdering Kareem Hunter. Deveron Patterson, 26, of Beckley is charged with first degree murder and was asking a judge to release him on bond pending further court proceedings.

Patterson was arrested earlier this month, along with Miguel Quinones, 36, of Charleston.

The arrests came after the initial suspect, Kelsey Legg, took a plea deal and agreed to cooperate.

Patterson's attorney, Jessie Forbes, tried to convince Judge Paul Zakaib Patterson should be free on bond and put on home confinement.

Patterson's family packed the courtroom shouting "I love you" as he was escorted back to jail after Zakaib denied the bond request. Forbes argued that testimony at Quinones' preliminary hearing indicated that Patterson did not know Hunter was going to be killed.

Detectives say Hunter was beaten with a rubber mallet in Legg's Marmet apartment, bound with duct tape, and then buried in a shallow grave near Beckley.

Legg, 20, had initially been charged with murder and kidnapping, but pleaded guilty to lesser charges of accessory after the fact to first degree murder, and attempting to aid and abet another person in concealing a dead body. She was released from jail and put on home confinement. Forbes also used that fact as an argument for Patterson to be released.

"Especially when you hear the state of West Virginia argue that someone facing this type of thing shouldn't have any bond, and they oppose bond generally, and then you have Kelsey Legg and they're aware of her involvement, and she's out on home confinement after having admitted involvement. This man's presumed innocent until such time that he faces a jury of his peers and has the opportunity to defend himself," Forbes said after the hearing.

Assistant prosecutor Dan Holstein opposed any type of bond in the case, citing a criminal history for Patterson. He also called him a flight risk, and said he was not a contributing member of society.
