DUNBAR, W.Va. (Dave Benton) -- The town of Dunbar is making a dent in drug crimes.

In the past month, Dunbar has made great progress.

Katherine McCormick is proud of the town's police department.

“Makes me feel great the police department is doing a fabulous job taking care of the situation, cleaning up the streets,” she said. “I know some of the drug dealers moved out of town, which is wonderful. It's just gotten better.”

Officers already made a dozen arrests this month, helping rid the streets of thousands of dollars in drugs.

Police said they've seized 176 grams of marijuana, 80 grams of cocaine, 70 grams of ecstasy and $400 in cash. Dunbar's new police chief Jess Bailes, who worked for the sheriff's department for almost 30 years, has brought his knowledge to battle the drug problem, but he and the mayor credit the community for the town's success this month.

“We'll keep being aggressive and be out there,” Bailes said. “Going to be on watch, the neighbors and community have been providing some valuable tips. We have a neighborhood watch program in full force, hitting it from all angles and will continue to do that.”

Dunbar Mayor Terry Greenlee said they are being very vigilant.

They call when they see something and that helps a lot. We only have so many eyes in the police department but there are thousands of eyes in the community. They're watching and calling.

McCormick is part of the neighborhood watch, and says keeping an eye on suspicious activity and reporting it is paying off.

“I've always felt safe, but it's always that little extra knowing they're out there and getting drugs off the street and dealers out of the city,” she said. “People are more cautious when they're doing the deals. They're going out and not coming in the city like they were.”

For anybody who wants information on how to help in the war on drugs, Dunbar's neighborhood watch group will meet at 6:30 p.m. this Wednesday at the bingo building.
