CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Katy Brown) -- A Kanawha County man has been arrested, accused of beating a 15-month-old child.

Jeremy Freeman was arrested Thursday after police said doctors found bruising, swelling and redness on the girl's face, all of which police said were not accidental.

Court documents also state a witness could hear the child crying and sounds similar to smacking, all before seeing injuries on the girl's face.

"I would have probably took action and went over there himself and made him feel like the little girl," Juan Rose of Charleston said.

Police said the incident took place at a home on Brook Road in Charleston.

The aunt of the girl, who is also the girlfriend of Freeman, took the baby to the hospital, thinking she was having an allergic reaction.

"I would have done the same thing. But I feel like her - she should have known that that was going on," Shay Weems of Charleston said. "She definnately should have gone somewhere sooner if she knew prior to the event."

The aunt told Eyewitness News off camera Freeman's alleged behavior was out of character. Other's said it's just plain unacceptable.

"No kid deserves to go through something like that," Weems said.

The incident is still under investigation.

Now the hope is that the girl and her family can move on.

"I hope everything's ok and I hope that you guys can push through this," Weems said. "It's always brighter on the other side."

Freeman is currently being held at the South Central Regional Jail on a $25,000 bond. He has been charged with child abuse resulting in injury.
