CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Fallon Pierson) -- Hotels in Charleston are losing business.
Ocupancy is down 5 percent from this time last year.

A number of reasons are to blame, but maybe not for the obvious reason - the water crisis. The Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau didn't specifically blame the crisis.

In fact, a lot of people such as government officials and members of the media stayed in area hotels just for that reason.

Weather is the likely culprit. It has kept people from flying into town.

Yeager Airport reports a 14 percent decrease in air traffic in February.

Hotels also have seen a decrease in large booking events, which is typically a big source of profit. The visitors bureau said that is about to change.

"We attribute that to a lot of factors: the economy, the bad weather. That's why we have events in the summer. We try to get people in those rooms in the weekends, whether it's the Power games or the Hot Rod Magazine event that's coming up in June," Convention Visitors Bureau President Alisa Bailey said.

Even though hotel sales are down, the visitors bureau as almost met its booking goals for the year -- 24,500 room nights.

Those bookings could have been made years in the future, however. This means that money won't be seen until the rooms are actually filled.
