SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Katelyn Sykes, Leslie Rubin) -- A man walking home from the hospital was attacked and robbed Friday, but what those thieves got away with was only of value to him.

Frank McMullen said he was walking home from Thomas Hospital around 1:00 a.m., when three black men robbed him at knife point near Joplin Park in South Charleston.

McMullen said he feels a little sorry for them after they put so much effort into the crime.

"I just got robbed!" he exclaimed to dispatchers when he called 911. "They took my breathing machine, and they just took off running. I can't get nobody to pull over here or help me or anything."

Moments later, McMullen said South Charleston Police swarmed the area.

"I aint never been robbed before so that was kind of nuts, being on that end of the stick," he said.

The 50-year-old said he was put in a bad situation after not being admitted at the hospital, and not having any money for a cab ride home, so his only option was to walk. He had almost made it home when the attack happened.

"They didn't get my wallet or any cash or anything like that, they just got the portable machine," McMullen said.

McMullen has a number of health problems and recently underwent Gallbladder surgery. He thinks the thieves thought he had something of value in the bag.

"Its kind of funny that they put in all that effort and didn't get nothing out of it, you know, but that's pretty crazy, you know. I see ladies at night all the time, when I go by there in a car, walking up and down the street, that could have been anybody," he said.

McMullen isn't holding his breath police will catch the trio, because he didn't get a good description of them but he does have a message for them if they ever do get caught.

"I'd just tell them, 'Sorry about your luck bud, because now you're going to jail for nothing,' " he said.

If you have any information on who the suspects are, call South Charleston police.

South Charleston police said they will be stepping up patrols in the area where a man was robbed of his oxygen machine Friday morning.

"That's a pretty rare crime for us to have here and it's something we definitely won't take lightly and like I said, we'll definitely make sure we're beefing up patrols in the evenings," said Robert Houck, Assistant Chief of the South Charleston Police Department.

Police said the man was walking home from Thomas Memorial Hospital when he was approached by three men who were near Old Superior and Joplin Park at around 1 a.m. One of the men had a knife and took a bag containing an oxygen machine off of the victim's shoulder.

Police think the men didn't realize what was inside the bag and thought there would be money in it. They're hoping once they realized what they had they ditched the machine and hope to recover it for the victim.

The victim hasn't been identified and neither have any suspects.

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Katelyn Sykes) -- South Charleston police are searching for three men who they said robbed a man of his oxygen machine Friday in Joplin Park.

Police said it happened about 1 a.m. They said the victim, who hasn't been identified but is in his 50s, had just been released from the hospital and was walking home when three men approached him, one of whom said he had a knife. The men stole the victim's bag, containing his oxygen machine and then took off.

Police said the victim did not know the men and believe this was a random crime. They also believe the men didn't realize the bag contained the man's oxygen machine when they took it.

The victim wasn't injured.

No suspect information is available at this time. Anyone with information that could help police in their investigation is asked to give them a call.
