ASHLAND, Ky. (Sean DeLancey) -- People in Boyd County are appalled that someone is accused of stealing objects from graves at a local cemetery.

The Ashland Police Department charged Richard Evans, 28, of Ashland with violating graves. Commonwealth Attorney David Justice said there have been at least 35 bronze vases reported missing from Rose Hill Cemetery in Ashland.

Slyde Stewart has lived next to the cemetery for over seven decades and said he finds the act disgusting.

"That's considered holy. That's considered under the auspices of God looking down on you," Stewart said. "It's probably one of those things where God would have come down and struck you dead."

Evans has been charged with violating graves, a felony charge that could land him in prison between one and five years.

Vicki Mowery thought the time for the crime the suspect could face wasn't adequate.

"You don't desecrate graves whatsoever. I don't care how far back you go. It's just wrong," Mowery said.

Evans is currently being held in the Boyd County Detention Center without bond. Police said there may be more arrests in connection to this case.
