CATLETTSBURG, Ky. (Darrah Wilcox) --William Stamper didn't know what was unfolding right in front of his Center Street home in Catlettsburg, but he knew he wanted to get his four-year-old son out of there. "Once we seen the (HAZMAT) suits I thought well it's probably not safe to be here," he said.

He and his son left as quickly as possible. The HAZMAT team helped several workers who they say were exposed to vapors from a chemical called methyl acrylate while working on a barge on the Ohio River.

"There was one patient that did have some shortness of breath, and some difficulty breathing, and the others were ambulatory, maybe that had some lightheadedness, initially," said Tom Adams, executive director for Boyd County EMS.

Four workers total had to be decontaminated and sent to King's Daughters Medical Center.

It's something first responders practice several times a year, so if and when they do have to use those skills, they're ready.

"We know everybody, we know what everybody's going to do, we know what we need to call and get extra resources for, we know what we already have on scene. So it works very, very well," said Adams.

Stamper has lived along the river for about six years, and he said lately, the concern for what's floating by has grown even greater, especially after hearing about the recent chemical spill in the Elk River in Charleston.

Luckily the water supply in Boyd County and the residents who live here were not in any danger. "I'm very thankful, especially since I've got three other kids," said Stamper.

CATLETTSBURG, Ky. (Tiersa Davis) -- A road has since reopened and the scene cleared following an industrial accident in which four people were hospitalized for chemical exposure in Boyd County.

The accident happened on a barge on the Ohio River about 10:15 a.m. Tuesday near Boggs Landing in Catlettsburg.

Four people were treated for vapor exposure to the chemical methyl acrylate. They were transported to King's Daughters Medical Center, but their injuries do not appear serious.

A portion of Center Street was closed for a period of time while HAZMAT worked to decontaminate those who were exposed. That road has since been reopened.
