Suspects Sought In Shooting On The West Side

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Katy Brown) -- Charleston's West Side has seen its fair share of shootings and Friday's may be no different for some people. But for people living in the Grant Street area of the violence is getting too close to home.

Charleston police responded to the call just before 2 p.m. Friday afternoon after they said four to six shots were fired.

A neighbor said she "heard a man yell out and then [she] heard two shots."

Lt. Steve Cooper said three men were walking on the sidewalk near the intersection of Grant and Russell streets when a maroon vehicle approached them. Cooper said one of the males on the sidewalk fired at the vehicle.

The shots had the neighborhood shaken up.

"I ducked because I didn't know what direction they were coming," the neighbor said. "I did not see a soul, not a car, not a body or anything. I didn't know what had happened."

Cooper said the suspects were gone when police got on scene.

"The suspects fled the scene and ran up the sidewalk and north on Russell Street, so we're also looking for the suspects," Cooper said.

Luckily, no one was hurt but police said a 3-year-old child was playing on the sidewalk just 30 feet from where the shooting took place.

"It's been very quiet on the West Side lately," Cooper said. "Something like this with a child being nearby is very upsetting."

For neighbors, it's more than upsetting, as they feel their safety is now on the line.

"It's getting worse. You know, the last few years there's been several shots up around the corner," the neighbor said. "It's the first time it's been right on this block."

Police are still looking for the three suspects they described as three black males. Police also say the gunman in this shooting was wearing a baby blue shirt.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Bob Aaron, Katy Brown, Jeff Morris) -- Charleston police said they were looking for three suspects after shots were fired at a vehicle Friday afternoon on the West Side.

Police said a 3-year-old child was playing on the sidewalk just 30 feet from where the shooting took place.

No injuries were reported.

Lt. Steve Cooper of the Charleston Police Department said three black males were walking on the sidewalk near the intersection of Grant and Russell streets when a maroon vehicle approached. Cooper said one of the males on the sidewalk, who was was wearing a baby blue sweatshirt, fired four to six shots at the vehicle.

The suspects then fled on foot. The vehicle was stopped in in North Charleston at 37th Street and Seventh Avenue. Police said the woman driver told them she believes the suspects mistook her for someone else.




CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Jeff Morris) -- Charleston police are investigating a report Friday afternoon of shots fired on the West Side.

Eyewitness News has learned that four or six shots were apparently fired as a passing vehicle on Grant Street.

No injuries were reported. A small child was in the area where the shots were fired.

Charleston police were at the scene.
