Bill Limiting Attorney General's Powers Appears Dead

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Kallie Cart) -- A house bill which would have limited the powers of the attorney general and established new ethical standards appears to be dead.

The West Virginia Senate is unlikely to take up the legislation which targets Republican Attorney General Patrick Morrisey’s office.

The judiciary committee has shown little interest in the proposal, which passed the House along party lines.

Although Democrats called it good public policy, the GOP said targeting just one office of the executive branch could create a constitutional crisis.

Earlier this week, Morrisey spoke out against the measure, saying it was a personal attack.

“This was a party line vote coming out of the House,” Morrisey said. “Obviously, I have hope that the Senate is going to act appropriately, because I think there are fundamental deficiencies to the bill that can't be fixed. It's not constitutional, and it’s set up in a way that doesn't reflect how the office of attorney general functions.”

Senators pointed out the state already has laws which address potential conflicts of interest and professional conduct.
Wednesday was the last day for bills to make it out of committee to be considered for passage.
