ASHLAND, Ky. (Tiersa Davis, Jeff Morris) -- King's Daughters Medical Center said it plans to defend the care provided by its cardiac program in lawsuits filed against the center by hundreds of former patients.

More than 500 former patients of King's Daughters Medical Center have filed lawsuits against the hospital, claiming it performed unnecessary cardiac procedures.

Hospital spokesman Tom Dearing said the hospital was expecting the civil suits to be filed this week.

"These lawsuits are being generated by Louisville-based and Texas-based law firms that persistently solicited our cardiac patients through multiple channels," Dearing said. "For over a year, we’ve cooperated in good faith providing hundreds of records as requested.

"The lawsuits do not provide a lot of information, so there's nothing to which we can specifically respond. However we do know some of the complaints relate to care as far back as 1995. As a hospital, we handle medical malpractice cases as needed and will process these claims using normal, established procedures. Unfortunately, this is an enormous burden on our local judicial system and ultimately diverts resources away from our community.

"King’s Daughters intends to defend the care provided by our cardiac program, of which we are very proud, and which has been recognized for its patient care and quality outcomes.”

The two complaints were filed Tuesday in Boyd County Circuit Court, Louisville-based Poppe Law Firm said. The complaints list 513 patients and accuse the hospital of "performing and billing for medically unnecessary and harmful cardiac procedures." The complaints state that the U.S. Department of Justice is investigating the hospital's cardiology service and certain physicians.

The complaints also state that the patients requested their medical records and the majority of them were denied access.

Previously, eight individuals filed lawsuits against the medical center making similar claims, the law firm said.

Any court proceedings would take place in Boyd County.

A comment from King's Daughters Medical Center was not immediately available.
