CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Taisha Walker) -- Seeing these birds may have you dreaming about that beach vacation, but your eyes are not playing tricks on you.

Those are seagulls you may have spotted in Charleston. Wildlife experts said there has been an influx of the birds across West Virginia this winter.

Rich Bailey, state ornithologist with the Division of Natural Resources, said ring-billed gulls have started their migration early due to the change in weather. He said the birds are likely heading to the Great Lakes region.

While the webbed feet birds are in the Mountain State, you will likely spot them by major waterways or in low-lying areas that lack grass, such as parking lots.

Ravenwood resident Rich Bailey said seagull sightings are nothing new. He sat eating lunch in a Kanawha City parking lot Tuesday while watching the gulls take flight.

"They're all over. They're in Parkersburg," Bailey said. "Anywhere on the waterline or the Ohio River. I think they're following the barges. That's what I think, and then they'll leave when it's warming up."

Bailey said there also is a large movement of wing black birds this year.
