CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Police said a Charleston man faces multiple charges after he struggled with officers following a fight with a woman who said their dispute began over an argument about Chinese food.

Zachary Hess Dawson, 26, of Charleston is charged with domestic battery, child neglect creating risk of injury and obstructing an officer, according to criminal complaints filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

Police said early Tuesday morning an officer went to Hess Drive for a report of a domestic battery with injuries. The victim said the suspect could have a firearm, and several officers responded. She told officers the suspect was at their house in the 2200 block of Oak Ridge Drive, and there were two small children in the house.

When they arrived at the residence, police said, they could see the front door was cracked open and there was blood in front of the door. Officers said when they searched the house, they found two young children in separate bedrooms, but could not find the suspect.

A K-9 unit was able track the suspect to a different home on Hess Drive. At the residence, police said they found an elderly woman in bed and asked her if anyone was in the room. Police said she indicated she did not believe anyone was there, but police said they found Dawson in a closet. Police said they pulled Dawson from the closet, took him to the ground and one officer struck him in the face with an open palm to gain control of the suspect and put him in restraints.

Police said Dawson had swelling on his right eye, possibly from striking the hardwood floor when he was taken down. Officers said he also had a busted lip and a cut on his hand from the domestic incident. He was treated at the station by medics.

The victim told police she and Dawson began arguing over Chinese food and things escalated. She said he choked her, and she bit Dawson to get loose, ran out the door and went to a neighboring residence to call police. Dawson claimed the alleged victim struck him in the face 12 to 15 times and threw a beer bottle at him.
