CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Kallie Cart) -- Charleston Mayor Danny Jones proposed a plan to drop the city's gun laws Monday night to keep a controversial gun bill from becoming law at the state level.

Jones presented his proposal to city council Monday. The plan would remove they city's gun ordinances from the books, which require a three-day waiting period to buy guns and allow only one gun purchase a month. The hope is that by doing that, lawmakers would drop Senate Bill 317. That bill could open the door to allow people with concealed weapons permits to carry guns into recreation facilities such as city recreation centers where children are.

Senators have said the bill is to make gun laws uniform across the entire state, but Jones says it's meant to target Charleston and is a danger to the public.

"Well, they don't allow guns on the state Capitol property, yet they want us to let guns onto our property. So we're trying to, if they want to make things uniform for everybody, make it uniform for everybody," Jones said.

The mayor asked for a show of hands from council members and said it appears there is enough support in council to take the city's gun ordinances off the books. That move would make the city's laws more in line with the rest of the state.

It would take two more city council meetings to actually pass the plan.

The Senate gun bill is still pending in the House of Delegates.
