JODIE, W.Va. (Bethany Simmons) - A Fayette County man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted and robbed a man who tried to buy prescription pills, deputies said.

James Mathew Moore, 53, of Jodie was arrested Sunday on a first-degree robbery charge, according to a news release from the Fayette County Sheriff's Office.

The alleged incident happened about 3:30 a.m., Feb. 13 when 911 received a report that an individual who was an apparent victim of a robbery and assault was brought to Montgomery General Hospital, Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler said.

Deputies spoke with the victim who they said was from the Dixie area of Nicholas County. The victim told deputies that he went to a residence in the river-front area of Jodie to check on a friend and that when he arrived, he was struck in the head multiple times with a handgun, threatened and held at gunpoint for several hours. He claimed he was then robbed of a small amount of money before being released.

The release said the victim later admitted that he had gone to the residence with the intention to purchase prescription pills and had been assaulted and robbed by Moore because the suspect believed he was a "snitch."

The Central West Virginia Drug Task Force investigated the incident. Investigators determined that Moore had previously been convicted in Fayette County Circuit Court in 2009 for the felony offense of delivery of a controlled substance - morphine - and was prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.

After his arrest, Moore was taken to the Southern Regional Jail.

"The victim in this alleged incident was not entirely innocent," Kessler said. "He admitted that he went to the suspect's residence to obtain drugs and was assaulted and robbed because the suspect believed him to be a 'snitch.'"

The incident remains under investigation by the Central West Virginia Drug Task Force. Anyone with information should call the Fayette County Sheriff's Office at 304-574-4216 or Crime Stoppers at 304-255-7867.
