CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Jeff Morris) -- Kanawha County deputies said there were more than a dozen accidents on county roads, including six with injuries, during a period when a winter storm moved through the area.

From 4 p.m. Sunday through 9 a.m. Monday, Metro 911 reported there were six accidents with injuries, according to a news release from the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff's deputies worked three of those wrecks. There also were seven accidents without injuries. Deputies worked four of those accidents.

The sheriff's office said roads are still covered with ice and snow, and salt trucks and plows will be unable to treat and clear roads fast enough to make them completely safe. Everyone is encouraged to stay off the roads and to use caution if travel is necessary.

Drivers also were reminded to clean off windows and windshields, mirrors, headlights, brake lights, the hood and roof on vehicles. The sheriff's office said it is important to be able to see clearly through windows and also crucial for other drivers to be able to see your vehicle's lights.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Jeff Morris) -- The several inches of snow that hit the area overnight and into the Monday morning hours created some slippery driving conditions, but many drivers apparently stayed off the roadways.

Metro 911 reported about 9:20 a.m. that 14 accidents had occurred in Kanawha County since midnight. None of those accidents had injuries, an emergency dispatcher said.

No major road closures were reported as of 9:20 a.m.

Some traffic stayed off the roads because more people were reporting for work later than normal or did not have to come in at all. State employees were instructed to come in on a delayed schedule and were supposed to report at 10:30 a.m. State employees who provide direct support for the weather event were told to come in at their regularly scheduled time. The Kanawha County Courthouse and the Judicial Annex were closed for the day.

Many school systems across the state, including Kanawha County, were closed for the day.

Meanwhile, Eyewitness News Chief Meteorologist Jim Barach said the snow should be tapering off by noon Monday. Click here to see the latest Eyewitness News Storm Team forecast here..
