CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Bethany Simmons) - As the snow continued to fall early Monday, travel conditions were dangerous for drivers across our region.

Metro 911 said road crews began clearing the roadways overnight, but road conditions remain extremely dangerous.

Many road crews have reported to Metro that plowing is not keeping up with the current snowfall. That snowfall was quickly coating the roads and a majority of the secondary roads will have slick conditions throughout Monday, dispatchers said. Motorists were advised to stay off of the roadways if at all possible.

Meanwhile, many schools across the Eyewitness News viewing area were operating on a closed or delayed schedule. Boone, Cabell, Kanawha and Putnam counties were just some of the schools closed around the region Monday. You can always find the most updated list of school closings and delays on WCHSTV.com.

Also on Monday, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin ordered state employees to report on a delayed schedule Monday, unless they were direct support for Monday's snow event.

A recorded message said state employees should report to work at 10:30 a.m. due to the predicted snow, ice and hazardous travel conditions. Workers who provide direct support for the weather event were told to report at their regular time.

State employees were encouraged to check the state employees information line for further guidance if conditions change at 304-558-9117 and 888-558-9117.

The Kanawha County Courthouse and Judicial Annex have been closed for Monday. Originally, the courthouse was going to open on a delayed basis and not open until 10:30 a.m., but that was changed as weather conditions continued to deteriorate.

Fortunately, the snowfall did not bring many power outages. Appalachian Power Co. reported on its website that as of 7:15 a.m., 559 customers in West Virginia were without power -- 118 customers in Cabell County, 135 customers in Kanawha County and 306 in Mingo County.

Meteorologist Brandon Stover said that much of the Eyewitness News viewing area would see between 5 and 7 inches of snow before this latest winter system was complete. Temperatures were expected to remain in the low 20s throughout Monday. You can get the latest Storm Team forecast on WCHSTV.com here.
