CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Dave Benton) -- This weekend is not only expected to pack a punch, but it could possibly affect the power in some parts of our region.

Now, it's common sense, and it’s not a bad idea to remind people about those winter tips if we lose power in parts of our region Sunday night.

It was a busy Saturday at Pile Hardware on Charleston's West Side.

Employees said people were stocking up on flashlights, batteries, candles and even generators, just in case the power goes out for a long time.

“Back up heat source of some type, of course, if we have a power outage,” Andy Pile, of the store, said. “It's going to have to be gas, unless you got a generator to run that. I think everybody's a little scared and on edge this time. I think the Derecho has done that for us, nobody's going to take anything for granted.”

According to the Red Cross website, they want to remind people to have a supply kit on hand, with water, food, a first aid kit and any medications you might need and a charged cell phone.

Doug Paitsel works for the power company and sees first-hand how ice can disrupt lives. He said being prepared is key.

“Ice is the worst thing on our lines and on our trees,” he said. “It concerns me more than snow and these things. It pays to be prepared.”

The Red Cross also says to have extra baby supplies like bottles, formula, food and diapers on hand.

And don't forget your pets.
