CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Katy Brown) -- Salt trucks have been hard at work all winter long, but sometimes the roads are still a mess for drivers.
Charleston Auto is gearing up for Sunday's big storm.
With ice and snow in the forecast, and some folks who either have to get somewhere or just insist on testing the roads, the towing company said the roads are going to be bad and they are prepared to stay busy.
Bruised, bumped and beaten - Mother Nature's wintry weather has really taken a toll on our cars, and the folks at Charleston Auto can tell you that first-hand.
"The towing side of it and the garage side of it has just been pretty well non-stop since January," Travis Harper, of Charleston Auto, said.
Harper said this winter season, Charleston Auto has seen it all: Tractor trailer wrecks, cars stuck in the middle of the interstate and some sliding over into ditches - all proof of why he said drivers need to be more cautious.
"I think most of them think they're driving on a racetrack,” Harper said. “Get themselves in a bind, jam the brakes up and it's just a sled. That's all it is. It's just a big heavy metal sled."
Slowing down and driving with icy conditions is something Todd Banister, a truck driver for Flower's Bakery, knows all about.
"Ice is what we worry about," he said. "Snow we can get around. When a layer of ice gets down you're really going to have to slow down."
Police said slowing down is the first thing all drivers should do.
Also, make sure there's enough braking room between you and the car in front.
And police also say don't be distracted - stay off the cell phones.
"If you're in a bind, call Charleston Auto, that's exactly right,” Harper said. “We'll take care of you."
We probably sound like a broken record again, but this is another one of those storms that, if you don't have to go anywhere, it's best to just stay home!
