CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Jeff Morris) -- Charleston homeowners who are eligible should expect to receive their garbage bag vouchers soon.

WasteZero, the company coordinating garbage bag vouchers and distribution, started its bulk mailing process of vouchers to city residents this week, according to a news release from the city.

The vouchers for garbage and recycling/yard waste bags can be redeemed at Foodland and Drug Emporium in Kanawha City, Drug Emporium on Patrick Street and Purple Onion in the Capitol Market during regular business hours starting March 1. Vouchers that were mailed in September expired on Jan. 31 and can no longer be redeemed.

Residents should expect to receive their vouchers over the course of the next week or two. Mailing of the vouchers is staggered, so recipients should keep in mind that not everyone will receive their voucher on the same day. Once you receive your vouchers, you may pick up the bags at your convenience any day of the week during regular store hours. Retailers will keep the bags in stock until these vouchers expire on July 31.

This is the second wave of free garbage bag distribution under the city’s contract with WasteZero. In addition to the change in distribution method, other changes also were made to the program. Unlike previous years, the city no longer keeps any inventory of the garbage bags on hand. Residents also are now able to purchase additional city bags at the participating retailers, if they so desire. While the city continues to provide the free bags, people in Charleston are not restricted to using only the city’s garbage bags for their waste. The refuse department will pick up any bagged trash put out along the daily routes.

Anyone who has not received their voucher by March 14, should call the City Collector’s Office at (304) 348-8024.
