MARMET, W.Va. (Katelyn Sykes) -- A water main break in Marmet caused quite a mess Tuesday morning, and neighbors aren't happy about how long it took crews to get out there to fix it.

The break was first reported by Rick McBryar at about 12:30 a.m. He lives on 99th Street, and for hours water rushed across MacCorkle Avenue, down 99th Street and into his backyard.

"This is unbelievable for one and it's uncalled for," he said.

Pools of water covered his yard and in some places it's several inches deep. It was also a concern for Elvie Tyler, who lives along MacCorkle Avenue. He said water from the break was inching closer and closer to his front door.

"It's a mess," Tyler said. "If it gets any worse, it's going to come right across the street into this building and we're going to have a mess inside."

Marmet city officials said the 6- to 8-inch line broke underneath MacCorkle Avenue, and it's undermining the pavement. Bubbles of water could be seen shooting out in several different places more than seven hours after it was first reported. City officials are concerned a total break could flood a nearby house or make the road icy and dangerous. They said they have spoken with the water company but were told the water company is dealing with another break and couldn't say when they would get to this one.

"I know they're short-handed and have major water problems everywhere, but this is a main thoroughfare through this end of the valley. As you can see, it could be a hazard," Marmet Street Commissioner Johnny Walker said.

Neighbors also are calling this an emergency and said it shouldn't take this long to get it fixed.

"I feel bad for him (Rick McBryar) because he's going to have to be swimming out there, and if they don't get it fixed soon, it's going to be through all of our yards," said Linda Parker, neighbor.

West Virginia American Water said in a release sent at around 11 a.m. Tuesday that a night foreman was dispatched to the leak in Marmet, as well as a leak in Charleston. The company said the leak in Marmet was small and wasn't causing any damage, in comparison to the leak in Charleston. Spokeswoman Laura Jordan said only five customers were experiencing temporary water service disruption in Marmet. She estimated at noon that repair time would be two more hours.

Both sites had to wait for utility line "locates" to be finished before repairs could start and that is company policy. Repair work got under way in Marmet about mid-morning.

MARMET, W.Va. (Trevor John Anderson) - A water main break is flooding MacCorkle Avenue in Marmet.

The break happened about midnight. It began as a small flow, but as the morning progressed, it became a steady stream.

Residents in Marmet are worried that it may flood their homes.

Rick McBrayar of Marmet called the break in to West Virginia American Water and Metro 911 at 2 a.m. He said he is worried about the water that is now flooding his backyard.
