CHARLESTON, WVa. (Jeff Morris) -- The longtime executive director of West Virginia's oldest and largest free clinic is retiring, and the organization's board of directors has selected a new person to take the reins.

Patricia H. White, executive director of West Virginia Health Right, announced her retirement effective June 30, according to a news release from the clinic. The clinic's board of directors has selected Angela Settle as the new executive director.

White has been the executive director of the clinic since its formation in 1982 and has advocated tirelessly for high quality health care for uninsured, underinsured, and medically underserved West Virginians for the past 32 years.

“With the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, our nation has made historic strides toward comprehensive health care reform. I suddenly realized that my dream of quality health care for everyone regardless of insurance or financial status is now within reach,” White said. “Although the decision to retire was difficult to make, I truly believe this is the right time for both West Virginia Health Right and for me personally. I leave knowing that the board of directors, the staff, and the clinic’s ‘army’ of dedicated volunteer medical and dental professionals will ensure that West Virginia Health Right continues to be an integral part of our community’s health care system.”

Meanwhile, White's replacement, Settle, has a long history with the clinic. She joined West Virginia Health Right as a family nurse practitioner in 1997 and has served as West Virginia Health Right’s clinical coordinator since 2003.

“I am humbled and honored by the opportunity to lead West Virginia Health Right, particularly during this time of profound challenges and unprecedented opportunities,” Settle said. “The clinic will remain true to its mission and continue to stand firm to its values of providing quality patient-centered health care to the medically underserved.”

Settle will assume the executive director position July 1.
