HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (Darrah Wilcox) -- Diane Carney said one of her biggest loves in the world is singing.
Not only is she a passionate singer, she is also a mother of three, grandmother to 10 and a survivor many times over. She is a two-year breast cancer survivor and a two-time heart survivor.
"I was in church when my first major incident happened," Carney said of her 2007 medical emergency. "I just didn't feel right."
Carney tried to brush it off, but her son-in-law, a doctor, finally persuaded her to seek help.
"He said 'No, you and I are going to St. Mary's,' " she said.
Doctors found an 80 percent blockage and put in a stint. Carney had no choice but to change her lifestyle.
"I did change my diet significantly," she said.
Carney also started coming to the cardiac rehabilitation facility.
"I love to walk," she said.
Carney's second event happened in 2010, and she had a pacemaker put in shortly after that medical issue.
For Carney, heart attacks are genetic.
"My dad had a heart attack at age 40. and my mother much later in life, but it's part of our genetic makeup, unfortunately," she said.
That is why it's important for her to talk to her kids and grandchildren about heart health.
"Education in my opinion is one of the most important things," she said.
Carney said she listens to her body more regularly.
"I pay attention. My stress is between my shoulder blades," Carney said.
Regular chiropractic care and massages help keep that stress at bay, she said.
"I think those two things are paramount," she said. "They keep you healthy."
Carney encourages others to take time to pay attention to their own well-being, and if your body is telling you something's not right, get help.
