CABIN CREEK, W.Va. (Chris Williams) -- A crisis team responded to a report of a licorice smell at Sharon Dawes elementary in Cabin Creek. The team conducted several tests in one classroom to see where the smell was coming from.

"The DEP does a smell test, the National Guard does a water test, and the Health Department does an inspection of the area,” said Sharon Dawes Elementary School Principal Natalie Vaughn.

The water test won't be back until late Monday night, or Tuesday, and the smell test came back negative.
But as a precaution the classroom was shut down for the rest of the day.

"We moved them to the library because it was a vacant room,” Vaughn added. “That’s where they have been all day. They haven't even been in the room."

Vaughn said the smell was only in the special needs classroom of the building. One kindergarten parent we spoke to says she's ok with the entire school not being shut down.

"It doesn't really bother me. I mean no one got sick, no one passed out or anything," said Kindergarten parent Angie Slater.

Slater said she and other parents she spoke to are happy with how the school handled the situation.

"They took the kids out of the classroom, they closed it off, so no other kids have access," Slater added.

Vaughn says none of the students in the building were affected from the smell.
