People are back in their homes in Dunbar after a propane leak forced the evacuation of a city block.

The evacuation order was lifted around 8:30 Friday night. The leak happened around 27th street and Dunbar Avenue, right near the middle school.

Emergency officials say a 500-gallon propane tank leaked about 200-gallons. The tank belonged to and was in the back yard of one of the homeowners in the area. Despite temperatures above freezing most of the day, the fittings had frozen. Firefighters had to pour hot water on the valve to loosen it, so they could shut-off the gas.

Emergency crews said they believe the tank had been tampered with or vandalized and that's what they suspect triggered the leak. It had been going on for a few hours.

When liquid propane leaks, it does not puddle, it vaporizes and dissipates into the air. That's what prompted the evacuations of the surrounding homes which started around 7pm.

Emergency dispatchers said the evacuations were necessary as a safety precaution while crews stopped the leak, they say the tank is secure again.

DUNBAR, W.Va. (Mamie Buoy) - According to Metro 911, the evacuation order has been lifted. They say people can safely return to their homes.

DUNBAR, W.Va. (Mamie Buoy) - Moutaineer Gas is evacuating a one block radius around 27th Street and Dunbar Avenue due to a propane leak.

It happened around 7 p.m. Friday.

Dispatchers say the evacuations are only a safety precaution while crews stop the leak.

We have a crew headed to the scene. Stay tuned to Eyewitness News for more information.
