CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Katelyn Sykes) -- On a day when most couples are celebrating love, one couple will be celebrating being single again.

For the past six years, Charleston lawyer Charles "Rusty" Webb of Webb Law Firm has given away a free divorce on Valentine's Day. Contestants had to present the most compelling story as to why they deserve the divorce.

Webb said over the years he's gotten a pretty good response and would get about a dozen entries from all over the state. Some of them even came from out of the country.

He couldn't go into details about why he chose this year's winner from Parkersburg, due to client privacy issues, but said her story was the most compelling and deserving.

Webb said he understands the irony of offering a free divorce on Valentine's Day but said he's glad to be able to offer this service to couple's he believes deserve it.

"For a lot of people, Valentines Day is not a happy day," Webb said. "It's a sad day so in my mind I'm giving them an Independence Day which is independence from a bad marriage."

Webb called this year's winner while Eyewitness News was in his office Friday morning. She said she was excited and happy she wouldn't have to worry about the cost.

While the service is free it still costs the winner a couple hundred dollars for all of the fees and court costs. Webb said the cost of a divorce varies but is roughly around $1,500.
