WALKER, W.Va. – State Police said a West Virginia state trooper responding to a domestic dispute in Wood County cut a rope and saved a suspect after he found the man trying to hang himself.

Cpl. C. J. Weekley of the Parkersburg detachment responded about 11 p.m. Tuesday to the report of a domestic dispute on Oak Grove Road, according to a news release from State Police. The trooper was told by family members that a 22-year-old man had battered family members before retreating to a bedroom with a knife in his possession.

Upon entering the bedroom, State Police said, the trooper discovered the man attempting to complete suicide by hanging himself. Weekley cut the rope and began first aid in an attempt to clear the man’s airway.

State Police said Weekley was able to establish rapport with the man after he regained consciousness and accompanied him to the hospital. A mental hygiene petition was served on the man once he was released from the hospital. The man and his family also were referred to the West Virginia Council for the Prevention of Suicide for further assistance.

“Troopers are trained to deal with a multitude of situations,” said Col. C. R. “Jay” Smithers, superintendent of the State Police. “Our Academy staff and guest instructors teach first aid, suicide prevention/awareness, and other skills necessary for first responders. Cpl. Weekley relied upon his training and as a result, a young man’s life was saved and his family is spared the agony of becoming yet another survivor of someone who completed suicide.”
