QUINCY, W.Va. (Stefano DiPietrantonio) – A local community is upset, they’re losing their grocery store. This is happening at the Quincy Kroger store in eastern Kanawha County. As the company explained, it all boils down to basic economics.

The Quincy store has not been profitable for the last three years. But Kroger said this all comes as they expand in Charleston.

"It's terrible,” Richard Yates, of Belle, who was sad to hear the news, said. “Terrible that they're closing this down. This has been one of the major stores in this area, really, and it's convenient."

Kroger is closing its Diamond store on April 11. 56 people work there.

"It's a shame we're going to lose all these jobs,” Yates said. “Which we need them."

"We certainly don't want to close it. We can't continue to run it at a loss," Carl York, who is Kroger’s Advertising and Public Affairs man for their Mid-Atlantic region, said.
York said 20 full-time and 36 part-time employees will be affected. The location has not turned a profit in three years. They have a union contract, York said, so positions will go by seniority.

"The other side of that though, is that we are spending some money in the Charleston area, upwards of $22 million, with Ashton Place and Kanawha City,” York said. “And when we do that, that will create jobs, so we're looking at 50 jobs there.

These folks can come work for us, somewhere else."

The Quincy store is not the only location closing. Kroger will also close its Weston store as well. They have roughly the same amount of employees, who will also be looking for a transfer or new jobs by April 11.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Bethany Simmons) -- Kroger announced Friday that it would close two stores in West Virginia.

The Kroger store on E. DuPont Avenue in the Diamond area of Kanawha County will close on April 11. The closing will affect 20 full-time and 36 part-time associates, according to a news release from Kroger. An official with Kroger said it would also close its Weston store location.

“It is a difficult decision to close a store,” said Carl York, spokesman for Kroger’s Mid-Atlantic region. “The Diamond store has been unprofitable for several years and is older and smaller than most of our stores.”

The store in Diamond is 31,000 square feet.

Kroger has 11 stores in the Charleston area.

“The closing is strictly a financial decision,” added York. “Our associates are hard-working. We appreciate their contributions and dedicated service through the years.” York said he estimates that Kroger will have created more than 50 new jobs by the end of this year in the Charleston area.

“We hope our Diamond customers will continue to shop at Kroger,” said York, pointing out that the closest stores are located in Marmet, in Kanawha City in Charleston and in Smithers.
