SOUTH POINT, Ohio (Katelyn Sykes) -- The Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating an early morning fire in South Point that destroyed a business, a home, two cars and damaged a second home.

The fire happened at Spaulding Carpet on County Road 1 about 1:15 a.m. Firefighters with the Fayette Township Fire Department said the building was fully involved when they arrived at the scene, and flames were shooting through the roof.

"That's when we knew it wasn't just a normal fire like we usually have," Firefighter Chris Vaughn said. "I mean you deal with a commercial-sized structure as big as this with carpets and the chemicals they use. It was definitely a bigger fire than we're used to."

The fire was so large that it destroyed a neighboring home and damaged a second. Firefighters from Fayette Township were forced to call in additional help, and crews from five neighboring departments spanning two states responded. At least 40 firefighters were at the scene on Tuesday morning.

Crews couldn't fight the fire from inside the building because the blaze was too big so they had to use a ladder truck from the Green Valley Volunteer Fire Department to attack it from above.

A propane tank inside the building exploded, but luckily no one was injured.

"It was pretty scary," Vaughn said. "Especially when everything's quiet. You hear the trucks, you hear people talking back and forth and radio communications and then you hear it vent and hear it explode."

Vaughn said they received reports from residents in the area who said the explosions rattled the windows on their homes and awakened their children.

An explosion is what brought Chris Saunders to the scene. He saw people talking about it on Facebook.

"I just cant' believe it," Saunders said. "This building has been here just as long as I can remember, probably at least 35 years."

Fire officials aren't sure what caused the fire and said the fire marshal was expected to arrive at the scene later Tuesday.

Eyewitness News hasn't been able to reach the owner of Spaulding Carpet for comment.
