HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (Darrah Wilcox) - With school not in session, many parents are wondering when their children will make up the school days.

In Cabell County, they've already exhausted six outside environment days built into the calender that can be used to make up missed days. They have a few more flexible days, including ISE, or staff development days. They are currently using those days for make up days.

Cabell County Schools Communications director Jedd Flowers said February is typically the worst month for winter weather in Cabell County, so they are a little concerned about the potential for more missed days. However, he said teachers and staff are already working hard to make sure students get in as much instructional time as possible, especially before state testing this spring.

"Our teachers are really going to have to work hard and double down and really go to the essential core questions of the curriculum in order to prepare for that state testing," said Flowers.

Flowers said there are 150 square miles in Cabell County, and the terrain is very different from one part of the county to the next. He said they have to take into account the dangers of parents, school employees and bus drivers to get the students to school.

"We don't like to miss school. We like to be in as much as possible but sometimes it's just unavoidable," said Flowers.

Today's missed day will be made up April 18. Here is a list of other scheduled make up days:

- February 17, 2014 (ISE Day)* - Make up for January 29, 2014 (Code Red)

- March 7, 2014 (OSE) - Make up for December 10, 2013 (Code Red)

- April 4, 2014 (CE) - Make up for January 28, 2014 (Code Red)

- April 21, 2014 (OSE) – Make up for January 3, 2014 (Code Blue)

- May 22, 2014 (OSE) – Make up for January 6, 2014 (Code Orange)

- May 23, 2014 (OSE) - Make up for January 7, 2014 (Code Orange)

- May 27, 2014 (OSE) – Make up for January 21, 2014 (Code Red)

- May 28, 2014 (OSE) - Make up for January 22, 2014 (Code Red)

- April 18, 2014 (ISE)* – Make up for February 3, 2014 (Code Red)

* ISE make up days will include a 2-hour early release so that the Faculty Senate can meet.

If another make up day is needed, there is an additional day available for scheduling:

- May 29, 2014 (ISE Day)

Flowers said parents can help get students stay prepared by reading a variety of materials to them at home.
