CROSS LANES, W.Va. (Katelyn Sykes) -- The Hurricane Police Department has identified the officer injured in an early morning wreck in Cross Lanes.

Police identified the driver as Officer Richie Poe. The Kanawha County Sheriff's Office said Poe was heading west on Interstate 64 when he lost control on the icy interstate and rolled his cruiser several times, trapping him inside.

"Sleet just started to hit this area probably just before 6 a.m. and the roads were getting slick quickly," said Lt. Scott Elkins, Kanawha County Sheriff's Office.

"Basically he was wearing a seat belt and due to wearing the seat belt and the position of the car that he wasn't able to get himself out," Lt. Elkins said. "So once we got some emergency crews on scene they were able to help him get out of the vehicle."

Emergency crews were able to free Poe, and he was able to walk to an ambulance. He was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center General Hospital.

"He's lucky that he wasn't injured any worse than he is," Lt. Elkins said.

Numerous emergency officials responded to the scene including the Nitro Fire and Police Departments, Saint Albans Fire Department and Tyler Mountain Volunteer Fire Department, as well as Kanawha County Sheriff's Deputies.

"Not just with them but with everybody but as a police officer you do kind of feel a sense of urgency to get up there and make sure everything is okay," Lt. Elkins said.

Hurricane police said Poe is doing well and is expected to be released from the hospital later Monday.
