CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Bob Aaron, Jeff Morris) -- Representatives of groups calling for clean water safeguards and regulatory enforcement were making their voices heard in Charleston on Thursday.

About 20 protesters were at the Charleston Civic Center Thursday morning where Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin was scheduled to address the West Virginia Coal Association Symposium. One of the signs read, "Keep Your Poison Out Of Our Tap!"

The demonstrators later planned to move their protest to the West Virginia State Capitol.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Heath Harrison) – Organizations calling for clean water safeguards and regulatory enforcement in the wake of the Freedom Industries chemical spill are planning a day of action for Thursday.

According to a news release, multiple citizen groups, including the West Virginia CARE Campaign and the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition, will rally at 9 a.m. outside the Charleston Civic Center.

The demonstration is set to precede Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin’s address to the West Virginia Coal Association Symposium inside the Civic Center at 9:45 a.m.

The demonstrators then plan to move to the State Capitol, where they will gather in the upper rotunda at 10:45 a.m. prior to legislators going into session at 11 a.m.

The participants then plan to deliver a citizens’ petition to the Governor’s Reception Room at 12:15 p.m. The petition, organized by WV CARE, asks Tomblin to make sure that the WV Department of Environmental Protection safeguards our water, people’s health and well-being.
