CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Bob Aaron) -- Some believe MCHM could have been leaking long before it was ever detected at the Elk River facility of Freedom Industries.

Dr. Paul Ziemkiewicz, director of the West Virginia Water Research Institute said the leak of chemicals would have taken at least 20 hours. That means the chemical got into the Elk River earlier than Jan. 9, the day state officials discovered the spill. 10,000 gallons leaked and contaminated water supplies for 300,000 people.

Ziemkiewicz said it could have been going in the soil for months before hitting the river. That did not surprise people living near Freedom Industries.

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection said it will not speculate on a timeline until it completes its investigation. A lot of things have changed since the spill was first reported, including what and how much spilled. None of the changes have been good news.
