CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Chris Williams) -- Charleston has a new gas station to fuel your vehicles, but it isn’t your run-of-the-mill station. A natural gas station has opened up, and customers can fuel up for $2.19 a gallon.

“It’s huge for the state,” said T.J. Meadows, state manager for IGS Energy. “It’s a chance for us to take a domestic resource that we produce every day in West Virginia, and use it as a transportation fuel.”

The new station is at Foodland on Bigley Avenue in Charleston, and is now the third one off Interstate 79. The two other stations are at Jane Lew and Bridgeport.

Meadows said it will be a big benefit “being able to drive I-79 from Charleston to Pittsburgh and back on compressed natural gas.”

You don’t have to drive a natural gas car for this station to save you money, however. Kanawha County leaders said it’s going to save taxpayers money.

“We’re able to save money,” Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper said “The fuel we’re putting into our government cars is cheaper now.”

The West Virginia Division of Highways already has 20 natural gas vehicles in its fleet, and Kanawha County switched two of its vehicles over to natural gas before the station was finished.

Carper said he hopes to have three to five more natural gas vehicles by the end of the year.

“We thought it would be common sense, the idea of using natural gas, right here, right from Kanawha County," Carper said.

The commissioner said natural gas is cleaner than gasoline, a fact that also will benefit the area.
