ST. ALBANS, W.Va. (Katelyn Sykes) -- Hours after a disturbing discovery was made inside a home on Jefferson Avenue in St. Albans, police tape still circled the home on Monday morning and officers remained at the scene.

Friends of Nancy Burdette Lynch, 66, came to check on her Sunday night after they hadn't heard from her in several days. That is when they found her dead inside.

"I had driven past it before and not thought twice about it," neighbor Christy Barnett said. "And that's really scary to think that how long she had been in there and then to drive past something and not be aware."

Neighbors said they were suspicious that something was wrong when mail was piling up outside Lynch's home for days. They all said they are in disbelief and saddened by her death.

"I feel so sorry for her," said a neighbor who asked to remain anonymous. "I just hope nothing bad happened to her."

St. Albans police are remaining tight lipped about the investigation and will only call Lynch's death suspicious. Her exact cause of death and time of death cannot be determined yet, police said. Her body was taken to the state Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

Neighbors said Lynch had a dog, was quiet and kept to herself.

"You just really don't see her a lot. She'll come out and work in her yard and stuff, but you just don't see her a lot," a neighbor said. "That's probably why no one knew."

As the investigation continues, these neighbors are coming together and trying to make sense of Lynch's death.

"It just makes me sad," Barnett said. "It has me really appreciating my family more now then ever and making sure that I'm doing the right thing to check in on my family members and maybe possibly my neighbors that I didn't do before so diligently."

The St. Albans Police Department said detectives will be investigating "indefinitely."

Nancy Burdette Lynch, 66, of St. Albans was found dead Sunday.

Police said the cause and time of her death have not been determined.

Lynch's body was taken to the state Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. Capt. James Agee said detectives are treating her death as suspicious and are continuing to investigate.

ST. ALBANS, W.Va. (Bethany Simmons, Katelyn Sykes) - The investigation continues into the death of a St. Albans woman after her body was found late Sunday.

The identity of the 66-year-old woman had not been released early Monday, but neighbors said they were in disbelief over her death. Police discovered her body at the home in the 2300 block of Jefferson Avenue.

St. Albans police are treating the death as suspicious and said the body had been sent to the state Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

Police said the victim may have been dead for days before friends discovered her body.
