BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (Dan Matics) -- Families of two brothers were in mourning Sunday, after the pair was shot on Saturday, while simply checking out a piece of property they had just bought.

Police said the two men, Garrick Hopkins, 60, and Carl Hopkins, 61, were gunned down by a person they didn't even know.

Police tape is still hanging in front of the home on Old Crow Road in Barboursville, a reminder of a very senseless crime.

Cabell County Sheriff’s deputies said Rodney Black shot and killed the two brothers.
Black originally said the two were breaking into his shed near his house, but police said the shed does not belong to him.

It belonged to one of the victims, who recently bought the shed and neighboring lot.

What had everyone shocked about the shooting is that police said Black gave no warning, and just pulled the trigger.

Regina Lafferty lives across the street. She stood on her front porch as gunfire rang out, and the victims fell to the ground.

"It wasn't even his building,” she said. “If you have a concern, you call 911 first. You don’t shoot, then call."

Her kids passed through the empty lot just hours before the shooting.

Even before the weekend's violence, Lafferty said she was afraid of her neighbor and told her kids not to go near Black's house.

"He was rude,” she said. “Just cold! A very cold person."

Black is charged with two counts of first degree murder.

He is being held in the Western Regional Jail. He declined a request by Eyewitness News for an interview.
