CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Katy Brown) -- A family came home from work Saturday night, just to watch their home burn down to nothing.
Neighbors living close by saw the orange glow rushed to see what was happening.
"I got up off the couch and went outside," neighbor Chris Ray said. "And it was fully engulfed in flames."
Loudendale, Davis Creek, Alum Creek, and Malden fire departments all responded.
Chief Lewis Fizer from Loudendale said nothing was left of the house when they got to the scene.
The fire broke out Saturday night around supper time in the 1300 block of Johnson Road.
Around the same time Saturday, Mother Nature left snow-covered roads, making things difficult for the crews.
"It was very slick, very slick," Fizer said. "The state road just wasn't able to get to it yet."
Once on scene, crews battled the flames for more than four hours and used more than 15,000 gallons of water. Fire crews were concerned that even that amount of water would not help fight the fire.
"We try to do everything for the community," Fizer said. "If it's cold, it's cold. It's going to happen."
The home was a complete loss for the family of four. Neighbors said the family had two dogs who did not survive the intense fire.
Now the goal is to help the family get back on their feet with the help of neighbors and Red Cross.
"We'll just try to comfort the family," Ray said. "Stuff like this happens, everybody needs to come together."
The State Fire Marshal's office was on scene Saturday night, but the cause of the fire was unknown.
