CHARLESTON, (Bob Aaron, Jeff Morris) -- Thieves who broke into the recycling center at West Virginia Recycling Services on Slack Street in Charleston did several thousand dollars in damage and stole batteries and wiring.

George Hunyadi with the recycling center said the thefts and vandalism apparently occurred on Friday. Batteries and wiring were removed from equipment, disabling a bailing machine that is used in the recycling process. He said damage was estimated at several thousand dollars, while the cost of the wiring taken was less than $100, he said.

Hunyadi said the recycling center will remain open. The center has been very busy recycling plastics in the wake of the water crisis.

Officials were reviewing surveillance video to see if it can assist in the investigation.

Meanwhile, he said he will ask the recycling board to improve the fencing so it would make it more difficult to get into the recycling center, which is located at 600 Slack St.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Bob Aaron, Jeff Morris) – The recycling center at West Virginia Recycling Services in Charleston was the target of thieves.

Officials said batteries were removed from a forklift and a sweeper, lights were taken off a vehicle and wiring was removed from a piece of bailing equipment.

It appeared to be the work of copper thieves.

Charleston police are investigating the thefts at the recycling center, located at 600 Slack St.
