CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Dave Benton) -- Police were investigating a shooting Sunday on Charleston's West Side.

One man was shot along a busy road, right beside a grocery store.

While Charleston police searched for shell casings along Roane Street beside Kroger on the West Side, people in the area were dumbfounded to hear of the shootout between juveniles.

“It's getting to the point where you can't even be safe during the day,” one person said.

Police said the shootout happened around 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Malik Watson, 20, was shot sent to the hospital to be treated. No word was available as to whether if Watson had a gun and was part of the shootout. Police said his injuries were not life-threatening.

Olivia Deel lives nearby, and has teenagers of her own.

“It's scary,” she said. “I have teenagers myself. I’d hate to think one of them would be involved in something like this.”

Police detained several people for questioning, and wrapped crime scene tape around a car parked in front of Kroger's entrance. Blood was found in the store’s parking lot.

The scene in broad daylight caused concern for parents.

“It's getting crazy,” Scott Hawkins of Charleston said. “A woman got beat about three weeks ago right on Five Corners. I'm scared for my kids. I don't even let them go out of the house.”

No word was available if police had made any arrests.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Heath Harrison, Dave Benton) -- Police were responding to a call Sunday of a reported shooting on Charleston’s West Side.

The call, which came in at about 3:20 p.m., reported shots fired in the 500 block of Delaware Avenue.

Police were on the scene and reported a male lying on the ground. Half of Roane Street was blocked off, and officers were searching the area for shell casings.

Two people were detained for questioning, but no arrests have been made.

Police said two teens were shooting at each other from across the street. One was hit in the leg.

Police said shots fired at three separates points on Roane Street.
