NITRO, W.Va. (Bob Aaron, Jeff Morris) -- The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection said Freedom Industries said it will comply with an order to come up with a plan to safely store the remainder of the chemical that previously leaked into the Elk River.

The DEP had previously said the company had to comply by 4 p.m.how it would safely store 4-Methylcyclohexane Methanol (MCHM) at Poca Blending in Nitro, where the chemical was taken after the leak occurred at the company’s location on Barlow Drive near Charleston.

The agency said Freedom said it would follow the order and deliver the plans to the DEP Thursday evening.

NITRO, W.Va. (Bob Aaron, Jeff Morris) -- The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection is planning to issue an ultimatum to Freedom Industries on Thursday, requiring the company to come up with a plan to safely store the remainder of the chemical that previously leaked into the Elk River.

The DEP said under the order the company would have to let the state agency know by 4 p.m. how it would safely store 4-Methylcyclohexane Methanol (MCHM) at Poca Blending in Nitro, where the chemical was taken after the leak occurred at the company’s location on Barlow Drive near Charleston.

On Wednesday, the DEP said it issued five citations related to the storage of MCHM at Poca Blending in Nitro. Some of the chief concerns are there is no secondary containment in the event of another leak or plans on what do in an emergency, the DEP said.

The DEP last week also ordered Freedom Industries to cease operations at its Barlow Drive operation while the chemical cleanup took place.

A water crisis was prompted in multiple counties last week after the leak into the Elk River. West Virginia American Water issued a do-not-use water advisory for eight counties and a portion of a ninth. It has lifted the ban for 70,000 customers, who can begin the process of flushing their plumbing systems and begin using the water again.
