Charleston, W.Va. (Katelyn Sykes) -- A Kanawha City neighborhood is relieved after Charleston police arrested a man in connection to the death of an elderly man.

Anthony David Caldwell, 39, of Charleston, is charged with first degree murder in the death of George Molle Jr., 90.

"I'm truly sorry for the life I've took," Caldwell said as Charleston police escorted him to a cruiser. "I'm sorry."

Caldwell said he knew how old Molle was and feels bad for what he did. Charleston police said Molle was violently killed inside his home on January 3.

"We can't go into the specific manner of death...that was used by the suspect," said. Lt. Steve Cooper, Charleston Police Department. "We can say that it was violent."

But Caldwell's criminal complaint paints a gruesome scene. Molle was found on the floor of his home and had multiple puncture wounds on his head and strangulation marks on his neck. Caldwell was spotted on surveillance cameras leaving Molle's home carrying two bags. One was found in a dumpster near Molle's house and inside was a bloody hammer and gloves.

"It's very heartwrenching and our hearts go out to the family of the victim," said Lt. Cooper.

Molle's close neighbor, Larry McGinnis, knew something was wrong Friday night when Molle didn't turn his back porch light on. McGinnis said Molle told him a couple years ago he'd turn the light on for him every night before he went to bed but on Friday night that light never came on.

Another neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous said Molle was a quiet man who kept to himself and is disgusted by what happened.

"Anybody that would hurt somebody like that or even bring trouble towards someone like that, someone so patriotic like he was would have to be a very disturbed person," he said.

Charleston police spent countless hours collecting evidence. Surveillance video also showed Caldwell cashing in change believed to come from Molle's home.

Now neighbors and police are relieved Molle's accused killer is off the streets.

Caldwell is being held in the South Central Regional Jail.
