DUNBAR, W.Va. (Kennie Bass) - This home in Dunbar was one of many experiencing heating problems as below zero temperatures blanketed the Mountain State.

"Well I've been having problems with my furnace kicking off and on," Michael Post of Dunbar said. "Last night it decided to take a downward slide and didn't kick on at all."

Chris Ice of Fire and Ice Heating and Cooling says service calls kept him hopping throughout the day.

"Today's been rough," Ice said. "Today's a lot of calls and everybody wants you to get there and you ain't got time for everybody. It's very hard to get to where you gotta get to."

Ice says the best way to ensure your system is ready to weather the load of extreme cold and heat is to have a continuing maintenance contract with a reputable HVAC company.

That way you shouldn't have any surprises when the thermometer plunges or soars.

"It puts a lot of strain on a system especially if people don't have a maintenance contract to take care of the system before something like this happens," ice said. "If you had a maintenance contract we would be there twice a year."

A gas fireplace helped this home stay warm even with the furnace on the fritz. But not everyone is fortunate enough to have a backup heating system.

"Luckily I had these backup gas logs that kept this part warm but the rest of the house was pretty cold," Post said.

If you experience problems late into the evening or outside of normal business hours, Ice is one of several heating and cooling companies throughout the region offering 24-hour emergency service.

You can reach Fire & Ice Heating and Cooling at 304-951-1979 if you run into a problem.
