Winter Storm Causes People Across West Virginia To Wake Up In Dark, Cold

WINFIELD, W.Va. (Katelyn Sykes) – Thousands of people across West Virginia woke up in the dark and cold Monday morning after strong winds knocked out power in several counties.

Appalachian Power was reporting outages in Putnam, Kanawha, Cabell, Lincoln and Mingo counties early Monday morning.

The town of Winfield in Putnam County was one of those areas hit hard. Businesses, the Putnam County Courthouse, 911 center and houses were all without power. The 911 center was able to continue operations, thanks to a generator, but not everyone in the town had that luxury.

Buffy Teel lives just down the street from the 911 center and said she could hear strong winds at about midnight.

"It was raining, pouring, sounded like a hurricane out here and all of a sudden the power went out and it went eerie silent,” she said. “No rain. Nothing."

Nearly 10 hours later without power, Teel said, her house was about 55 degrees inside. She said she is trying to keep warm by wrapping herself in blankets and laying on her bed.

"The heat went out before and we had electric, so this time I wasn't so lucky,” she said. “I can't keep the electric blanket on, so we're going to be leaving here pretty soon or getting in the car."

Other people without power in this neighborhood in Winfield also are finding shelter in their cars. Members of one family had been camping in their car since about 6 a.m. Monday.

Arby Webb is one of the lucky ones in Winfield because he said his house is actually pretty comfortable inside.

"I've got one of those unvented gas heaters, but if it hadn't been for that I would have to move somewhere," Webb said.

Webb spent some of his morning checking on a neighbor who lost power and is on oxygen.

While businesses and homeowners were in the dark and cold, AEP crews were out in the elements getting power back on as quickly as possible. They were able to get power restored to Winfield residents at about 10 a.m. The Putnam County Courthouse will remain closed throughout the rest of the day.
