PROCTORVILLE, Ohio (Dan Matics) -- A woman is dead after fire ripped through her Proctorville home Sunday.
The flames spread to a neighboring trailer, leaving that family homeless.
A total of seven people made it out safely, but that sadly, was not the case for their next door neighbor.
People in the area are already stepping up to make sure the family has food, clothing and a place to stay.
Michael Jarell is trying to salvage what is left of home, while hanging on tight to what's most important.
"Numbness,” he said. “There ain't nothing you can do."
Jarell, along with his very large family, is trying to save a few memories after a fire claimed both his home and his neighbor's.
Firefighters said the blaze started next door at the trailer, on Front Street in Proctorville. Unfortunately, the person living there did not survive.
"That's sad about next door,” Jarell said. “I wish she would have got out, but it didn't happen."
But it wasn't Jarell who stepped up when the fire spread to his home.
It was his 7-year-old grandson, Alex, who sprang into action helping get all *seven people inside out of harm’s way.
“We went into my cousin's room and the windows had already melted," Alex said.
His family now calls him a hero.
“I didn't want them to get hurt in the fire,” he said. “I didnt want to leave. I would have felt bad.”
And by doing right, his family is now thankful beyond words.
The name of the person who passed away next door is not being released.
The state fire marshal's office is investigating the cause.
